Wood Wharf Design Competition
The official announcements are up! Myself and my course-mate Danny Mitchell were the winners of the Wood Wharf design competition launched by Canary Wharf, the Landscape Institute and Townshend Landscape Architects.

I still can’t believe we won and I don’t think it’s entirely sunk in yet! So, so pleased, and it’s...

Rachel Armstrong: Beyond Sustainability #STU01 |... →
Interesting new concept for delivering a lecture; using twitter. Sending 25 x 140 character tweets on a subject and entering into a live discussion with those following around the world. Developed by The Swedish Twitter University.
This one was given by a lecturer from my uni (University of Greenwich) on sustainability.

Sketch design for studio - Sustainable Urban Drainage (SuDS)
This was my second sketch design for our Theme Project unit. Again, another 1 minute silent presentation, this time using the theme of SuDS and integrating this into a London site.
I chose a local site to me, the Sainsbury’s (and Comet / B&Q) car park at Bugsbys Way. I thought this particularly relevant as this is meant to be one...

Sketch Design for studio - Re-balancing the carbon cycle
Presented my first one minute silent presentation this week at uni (missed the SuDS week due to a little holiday in Spain). This weeks task was to show how landscape architects can re-balance the carbon cycle for a site in London. I chose our Avery Hill campus. Decided to produce it in a video rather than powerpoint. We only have a minute...

I love halloween...
I have a hideous amount of work to do, both uni and paid work, but tonight I’m heading out. Been attempting to plan my outfit all week. The budget is non-existent, so it’s a bit of a re-hash of outfits past, but creating something new. So far it’s half the Shoreditch cool-kid outfit from my recent birthday, with the hair from last years gaga birthday, with a bit of 2008’s...

Does Brighton need a 'London Eye'?
Just seen some of the construction pictures of the new observation wheel going up in Brighton. Having grown up in Brighton, I’ve always thought of the city as very forward thinking, always one to buck the trend, to go for something truly unique, building on the historical character of the city. I mean, the Prince Regent built a whooping great oriental palace in the middle of the town....

BBC News - Millions stroll in New York's 'park in... →
A short little video from BBC World News on the High Line in New York. One of the most successful public parks to open anywhere in the world in the past couple of years. Beautifully executed and so inspiring.
Designed by a multi-disciplinary design team featuring James Corner Field Operations (Landscape Architects) and Diller Scofidio + Renfro (Architects), with planting masterminded by Piet...

First presentation of the new school year
Attempting to analyse, decipher and regurgitate the design principles of Ian McHarg (see his book Design With Nature), and how he and his team formulated the plan for The Woodlands, “the best example of ecologically based new town planning in the United States during the 1970s”. And then get all of that into a 3.5 minute presentation where I don’t read from my notes.
Will let...

RHS Wisley
Had our first field trip of the year today to RHS Wisley. I haven’t managed to get here for a number of years, I think last time I was there the Tom Stuart-Smith designed garden around the glasshouse was only in it’s first season, so it’s been at least 3 or 4 years.
Today was glorious. Extraordinary weather for the 1st of October. Shorts weather in fact! One of my new tutors,...

My first client
Over the summer, I managed to pick up my first garden design client. The opportunity came about through The Garden Network forum, where my client had placed an ad for help with their roof terrace in Islington.
The design is now finished and is with their chosen contractor. It’s a large split-level roof terrace, although we are only deisnging for the main lower terrace at this stage. It...

Ready to go again...!
Tomorrow I’m back at uni. Back to Greenwich, but this time to study a post-graduate diploma in Landscape Architecture. I’m still not entirely sure what the course itself will entail, but I learnt so much last year, and found it so inspirational working on large scale schemes, learning about landscape architecture, the role in plays in our everyday lives and how much more important it...
